FAQ’s (Frequently Asked Questions)

My gums bleed after I brush. Is this something to be concerned about?

Bleeding is usually a sign of a problem. When gums bleed, the cause usually stems from brushing too hard or from early-stage gum disease, called gingivitis. We can consult with you on the proper toothbrush and pressure for safe, effective daily oral care. If your gums show signs of gum disease, we may recommend a deep hygiene treatment to alleviate your symptoms and return your gums to good health. Gum disease is the leading cause of tooth loss for adults and has been linked to many overall health conditions, including stroke, heart attack, and respiratory problems.

My teeth are stained. Can you help?

What can you do to improve the appearance of my smile?

Well, we’ll start by evaluating your oral health, existing smile, and discussing your idea of a spectacular smile. We may suggest porcelain or minimal-prep veneers, teeth whitening, and replacing metal dental work with esthetic restorations. Your smile may benefit from some artistic bonding and contouring or Invisalign clear braces.

I have old, dark fillings. Is there any hope for my smile?

Dark fillings and metal crowns can be replaced with strong, esthetic solutions. We offer porcelain crowns. We’re a metal-free and mercury-free practice and only use safe, biocompatible materials for our restorations.

Crowns, veneers, onlays, inlays, partials… can you explain more about what these procedures mean?

We use modern technology, materials, and techniques to restore weak, broken, chipped, discolored, and/or crooked teeth and bring them back to their original shape and function.

For example, we apply white, all-porcelain crowns, sometimes called caps, to restore structural integrity to compromised teeth. A crown also protects a tooth after a large area of decay has been removed and filled. For decayed or damaged surface chewing areas that don’t require a full crown, we may recommend a protective inlay or onlay. Made of precious metal or composite resin material, inlays and onlays add strength and prevent decay. If you need a filling, we often apply tooth-colored composed resin instead of silver amalgam to strengthen teeth and protect against further damage. Similarly, we can transform cracked, discolored, crooked, or otherwise flawed front teeth with paper-thin porcelain veneers or Lumineers.

What can you do to straighten my smile?

Porcelain veneers and Lumineers can correct slight misalignments and gaps, as well as discolorations, chips, and other imperfections. Porcelain veneers are one of the most popular cosmetic dentistry procedures available today. Make an appointment to learn more about transforming your image with cosmetic dentistry.

I brush every day, but my breath just is not fresh. Is there anything I can do?

In your checkup, we can look for the cause of your bad breath, also known as halitosis. Some patients suffer from bad breath caused by tooth decay, gum disease, or a smelly substance put off by bacteria. With modern procedures and products to promote fresh breath, we can help you regain your confidence!

What is the difference between Veneers and Lumineers?

Lumineers are actually a brand of veneers that requires minimal or no tooth preparation prior to placement. Some patients prefer Lumineers because of the quick application and reduced risk for sensitivity. However, others prefer traditional veneers because of their completely customized design.

I want my front teeth to look better, but I don’t want to wear braces, what can you do to help?

We offer many ways to improve the look of teeth without applying traditional braces. First, though, we suggest that you attend an evaluation with us. You may be surprised at the results of a little moving and straightening. And with today’s invisible orthodontia, no one has to know that you’re wearing braces!

What are my options to replace missing teeth?

We offer bridgework, partials, full dentures, and dental implant restorations to replace missing teeth. Learn more about these services on our services page, then call for a consultation. With X-rays, intraoral photos, and a thorough assessment of your dentition, we can help you decide which replacement option will be best for you.

After my root canal, will I experience sensitivity to hot and cold?

After a successful root canal, patients may experience some sensitivity. The sensation should subside over time. If after a week or two you still have problems, call our office so that we can evaluate the situation and help you find relief!

I have chronic headaches. Can you help?

Chronic headaches may be a symptom of a misaligned bite, bruxism (grinding), or TMJ disorder. We will carefully examine your occlusion (bite), jaw, head, and neck to determine the underlying causes of your pain. Oftentimes, we can correct the problem with a custom nightguard. Call our office if you have more questions about headache relief with non-surgical therapies.
